Nasal Contouring (Rhinoplasty)

What is nasal contouring (rhinoplasty)?

Nasal contouring (rhinoplasty) is a surgical procedure performed to restore balance to the nose in relation to the rest of the face.  Incisions are placed within the nose and small area between the nostrils (columella) to improve the size of the nose by narrowing the nostrils and changing the bridge or tip of the nose. Rhinoplasty can produce a more contoured and shapely nose. 
     
Who is a good candidate?

• Good candidates are men or women who have:

  •	Bump on the bridge of the nose
  •	Wide bridge of the nose
  •	Wide nostrils
  •	Full or thick nasal tip
  •	Nose that is out of proportion to the rest of the face
  •	Difficult nasal breathing not associated with allergies

• Non-smokers or have ceased smoking two months prior to the procedure
• Overall good health

What to expect during your consultation.

Dr. Stephenson will evaluate your overall health. More specifically, he will evaluate your skin quality, the internal aspect of the nose and the underlying bone and cartilage shape.  Additionally, Dr. Stephenson will evaluate the relationship of your jaw and chin.  Based on this evaluation he may recommend additional procedures to provide better facial balance and proportions. This evaluation will help him to develop your individual plan.  He will also review the risks involved in nasal surgery. Dr. Stephenson encourages you to discuss any areas of your appearance that concern you as well what you hope to accomplish with surgery.  This will help him understand your goals/expectations and whether these expectations can be realistically achieved.

Rhinoplasty Recovery

Swelling and bruising are expected around the eyes and nose after rhinoplasty.  The swelling and bruising will start to resolve during the first week after surgery, although this will vary between patients. You must avoid strenuous activity for several weeks following surgery. The final result from nasal contouring continues to improve over several months and the final result is evident in about 12 months.
