What is a eyelid contouring (blepharoplasty)?

Eyelid contouring is a surgical procedure performed to restore a more youthful appearance to the upper and lower eyelids. Many patients have excess skin or bags (fatty deposits) of the eyelids that may lead to a more tired appearance. This extra skin and fat is removed by placement of an incision in the natural crease of the upper and lower eyelids and extends laterally to address some minor wrinkles in this area.

Who is a good candidate?

Good candidates are men who demonstrate:

• Bags under the eyes (fatty deposits)
• Fullness of the upper eyelids (fatty deposits)
• Excess skin diminshing the natural fold of the upper eyelids
• Excess skin and wrinkling of the eyelid
• Non-smokers or have ceased smoking two months prior to the procedure
• Overall good health

What to expect during your consultation

Dr. Stephenson will evaluate your overall health. More specifically, he will evaluate your skin quality, skin laxity, folds, wrinkles of your eyelids as well as the position your eyebrows. This evaluation will help him to develop your individual plan. He will also review the risks involved in eyelid surgery. Dr. Stephenson encourages you to discuss any areas of your appearance that concern you as well what you hope to accomplish with surgery. This will help Dr. Stephenson understand your goals/expectations and whether these expectations can be realistically achieved.

Blepharoplasty Recovery

Swelling and bruising are expected around the eyes after blepharoplasty. The swelling and bruising will start to resolve during the first week after surgery, although this will vary between patients. You may experience increasing tearing or dryness for several days after surgery. Wearing contact lenses will be restricted for one week. You must avoid strenuous activity for approximately one week following surgery.
