What is ear contouring (otoplasty)?

Ear contouring (otoplasty) is a surgical procedure, commonly termed “ear pinning”, performed to position the ears closer to the head by reshaping the supporting cartilage. Ears that protrude can be a physical feature that is a frequent source of embarrassment for many patients especially men since most men wear closely cropped hairstyles. Well hidden incisions are placed behind the ear to gain access to the cartilage of the ears for contouring. Otoplasty bring the ears in balance with head and face.

Who is a good candidate?

Good candidates are men who have:

• Self confidence issues because of their ears
• Protruding ears
• Under developed ear cartilage
• Non-smokers or have ceased smoking two months prior to the procedure
• Overall good health

What to expect during your consultation

Dr. Stephenson will evaluate your overall health. More specifically, he will evaluate the position of the ears relative to the head and the quality of the cartilage of the ears. This evaluation will help him to develop your individual plan. He will also review the risks involved in ear surgery. Dr. Stephenson encourages you to discuss any areas of your appearance that concern you as well what you hope to accomplish with surgery. This will help him understand your goals/expectations and whether these expectations can be realistically achieved.

Otoplasty Recovery

Swelling and bruising can be minimal after otoplasty. The swelling and bruising will start to resolve during the two weeks after surgery, although this will vary between patients. A head dressing is applied immediately after surgery and removed at your first office visit. An elastic headband must be worn for several more weeks for protection. You must avoid strenuous activity for one month following surgery.
