What is chin enhancement (genioplasty)?

Chin enhancement (genioplasty) is a surgical procedure to improve the appearance of a recessed chin.  A recessed chin can have tremendous negative influence on the appearance of other features of the face especially the neck and nose.  Improving the position of the chin can have a wonderful effect on facial balance. The chin may be brought forward by one of two techniques; adding a synthetic implant to the bone (chin implant) or by moving the chin bone forward (osteotomy) by cutting and repositioning it. Incisions can be placed inside the mouth or in the small crease that usually exist beneath the chin.

Who is a good candidate?

Good candidates are men and women who have:

• Recessed or 'weak' chin
• Lack of definition to the neck
• Non-smokers or have ceased smoking two months prior to the procedure
• Overall good health

What to expect during your consultation.

Dr. Stephenson will evaluate your overall health. More specifically, he will evaluate the origin of the chin shortness is determined by looking at the face and neck as well as the position of the teeth. In some patients a severe overbite (lower teeth behind the upper teeth) may be present and the chin position may be a reflection of an overall shorter lower jaw. In these patients, other treatment options may be considered (jaw surgery). He will also review the risks involved in chin enhancement. In some cases, an x-ray in profile may be useful to look at the bone and the facial profile for treatment planning. Dr. Stephenson encourages you to discuss any areas of your appearance that concern you as well what you hope to accomplish with surgery.  This will help him understand your goals/expectations and whether these expectations can be realistically achieved.

Genioplasty Recovery

Swelling and bruising are common after genioplasty. A chin strap is usually used after surgery to control swelling and help the overlying tissues adapt to the implant or bone. When the chin bone is moved, there is usually a short period of lower lip numbness that resolves several weeks after surgery. The swelling and bruising will start to resolve during the 7 to 10 days after surgery, although this will vary between patients.
