What is an arm lift?

An arm lift (brachioplasty) removes excess skin and fat deposits from the upper arm.  Excess skin can develop from the natural aging process or after massive weight loss. An incision is made from the elbow to the underarm on the inner aspect of the upper arm. In some patients this incision may extend onto the side of the chest. Liposuction may be used alone or in conjunction with an arm lift to remove excess fat in the upper arms. This produces a tightened and more youthful upper arm.

Who is a good candidate?

Good candidates are men or women who demonstrate:

• Excess skin and fat or the upper arm(s)
• Stable weight if excessive skin is due to massive weight loss
• Non-smokers or have ceased smoking two months prior to the procedure
• Overall good health

What to expect during your consultation

Dr. Stephenson will evaluate your overall health and more specifically evaluate your skin quality, skin laxity, and the amount of fat of the upper arm to develop your individual plan. He will also review the risks of arm lift surgery.  Dr. Stephenson encourages you to discuss any areas of your appearance that concern you as well what you hope to accomplish with surgery.  This will help Dr. Stephenson understand your goals/expectations and whether these expectations can be realistically achieved.

Brachioplasty Recovery

Swelling is expected after brachioplasty surgery although this varies between patients.  The swelling starts to resolve during the first two weeks after surgery. A compression garment or sleeve may be needed to control swelling.  Most patients can resume modest arm activity in three to four weeks.  Complete recovery occurs in about four to six weeks.
